Superherbs – The New Superfoods?

Herbs have been used medicinally, cosmetically and nutritionally for thousands of years. Their benefits are no longer considered an “old wives’ tale,” and in fact, herbs have been found to be natural antacids, antivirals, antiseptics, antifungals, anti-inflammatories and even antibiotics in recent years. Most of these so-called superherbs are quite common and easily accessed, and many nutritionists are calling them the new superfoods. Let’s take a look at a few of the most common herbs and the benefits that they offer, according to StyleCaster.

Turmeric

This herb has long been known for its intense anti-inflammatory properties and is often used to treat the symptoms of diseases like arthritis. It is also full of antioxidants!

Astragalus

This Chinese herb stimulates the immune system and aids in digestion as it is an antacid. It even helps boost your metabolism.

Licorice Root

This immune system booster contains a substance that has been shown to be effective in treating viruses – including the flu – and is also good for the digestion. It has been known to interact with certain medications, however, so check with your doctor before using it.

Garlic

This most common herb, frequently used in cooking, has been touted as being an antibiotic, able to lower blood pressure, and possible even acting as an anti-carcinogenic.

Schizandra Berry

This herb, often used in Chinese medicine, is great for cleansing the liver. It also is touted as a known antiviral and serves as a good herb for general detox.

Ginger

Ginger is wonderful for digestive issues and can settle an upset tummy, but it also has received praise in recent years for use relieving muscle soreness after strenuous exercise and workouts.

Jalapenos, Cayenne Peppers, Chili

These hot and spicy herbs are great for weight loss, as they stimulate the metabolism and help burn calories. Just be careful of how much spice you can handle!

Mullein

This herb can be used as a tea and has been shown to work as a decongestant. It also is a soothing treatment for other issues concerning the lungs.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a great pick-me-up if used in cooking – especially sweets and candies – or makes a fantastic tea. Like ginger, peppermint also helps settle upset tummies.

These are just a few of the herbs you can find with “super” properties. Chances are many of these nutritionally packed herbs are already in your pantry, but you never knew the hidden benefits of these commonplace herbs. Sprinkling these seasonings or adding more of them can not only add flavor to your meals, but possibly even aid with many medical issues that we all face. It is no wonder that they are being called superfoods.
