Whether you you’re feeling sluggish, headachy, or your digestive tract is a mess—uncomfortably slow, gassy, or bloated; fluids on your stomach, or ankles are swollen, and you just can’t seem to lose weight—colon therapy is a great way to kick-start a detox.
Ridding your colon of fecal matter and toxic build up will allow you to better absorb nutrients and help you feel better fast.
A hydrotherapy therapy treatment, or colonic, will soften your stool, flush out toxins, slough off hard fecal matter, lubricate your colon, and retrain it to improve peristalsis—the constriction and relaxation of the muscles of the intestine or another canal, creating pulsing movements that push the contents of the canal forward.
Your colon—which is approximately 5 ½ to 6 feet long, plays a major role in the digestive process by removing water, some nutrients, and electrolytes (essential minerals) from partially digested food. When your colon is functioning well, the remaining solid waste, or stool, moves through until you eliminate it.
What to Expect
Colonics should be administered by a trained and certified colon hydrotherapist. (You can search for one near you at https://www.i-act.org/.)
You will undress from the waist down and lie on your side on a massage table with your body covered by a sheet or towel. The hydrotherapist will then release a gentle stream of purified water into your colon. The water slowly softens stool and any sludge, making it easier to empty through the tube into the sewage system. The therapist may alternate between warm and cool water or gently massage your abdomen.
Prep & Afterwards
It’s best to eat lightly before your colonic, allowing at least two hours before your treatment. Hydration afterwards is the most important thing to help your body continue to flush out unwanted matter. Filtered water, herbal tea, kombucha (a fermented drink made with probiotic bacteria and yeast, and often mixed with tea), and coconut water are good choices. Eat plenty of fruits and veggies for the rest of the day and avoid red meat, alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and heavy meals that will slow you down.
And don’t go running off afterwards to your next event or appointment. Enjoy the sense of relaxation after the therapy, which will leave you immediately feeling lighter and more comfortable.
A good choice for your next meal would be a soup. Here’s one to try.
Creamy Broccoli
2 servings
Cauliflower cream:
- 1 quart distilled water
- Oregano, to taste
- 1 cup cauliflower, chopped
- Flat leaf parsley, to taste
- Garlic, to taste
Soup base:
- 2 cups broccoli, chopped
- 1 cup green beans, chopped
- 1 cup carrots, peeled and chopped
To make “cream,” boil cauliflower, oregano, parsley, and garlic in 2 cups of water over high heat until completely soft. Blend until creamy, then set aside.
For the soup base, in 4 cups of water, boil broccoli, green beans, and carrots, along with a dash of your favorite spice or no-salt seasoning, until all the vegetables are soft enough to blend. Pour 1/8 cup of broth into blender and add softened vegetables. Blend to a thick consistency. Add the cauliflower “cream” on top.
